Adult Treatment
El Paso, TX

Woman smiling with braces at Gross Orthodontics in El Paso, TXWhen most people think of braces and other orthodontic gear, they think of younger patients. However, adult orthodontic treatment is on the rise. About one out of every four patients we see for orthodontic conditions here at Gross Orthodontics is an adult. While we do work with young patients to correct any orthodontic issues as soon as possible, some adult patients have not had access to dental care before. It is also possible some conditions did not appear early on or are the result of accidents that occurred later in life. Regardless of the reason why, we are always here to provide adult orthodontic treatment to those who need it.

What Does Adult Orthodontics Treat?

Adult orthodontics includes treatment for everything child orthodontics does. This includes issues such as crowded teeth or large gaps between teeth. It also involves treating overbites, underbites, crossbites, and other issues with jaw and teeth alignment. While some of the treatment methods may be different, there is no orthodontic issue that cannot be treated in adults. Regardless of how severe your orthodontic issue is, we can develop a plan to correct the issues.

How Do We Treat Adult Orthodontic Patients?

The treatment methods we use do depend on what orthodontic condition the patient is dealing with. Some of these treatment methods are the same we use with younger patients, but some are not. We often have different options that adults can make use of. For example, while some adult patients do end up wearing braces, many can opt for Invisalign aligners instead. Younger children may not have the patience to keep these aligners in their mouths for long periods of time, but adults do. For treatment of some issues such as severe misalignment, though, braces may be the better option.

Overbites and underbites can also be treated in adults, although the process is not as easy as it is in children, whose jaws are still developing. Treating overbites and underbites can take several years, especially for severe conditions. Some patients may even need surgery to reduce, increase, or reshape the jaw. Because every patient is different, we will start with x-rays and then work with you to determine the best course of treatment.

Why Seek Out Adult Orthodontic Treatment?

There are many benefits to adult orthodontics. By dealing with the crowding in your mouth, you will find that it is easier to clean your teeth. This will result in fewer cavities, bouts of gingivitis, and other issues. You may also find it easier to chew or even to talk. The same is true for adjusting the spacing between your teeth. These large gaps allow bacteria and other debris to collect, which can promote cavities and gum disease.

There are also aesthetic benefits to orthodontic treatment. By straightening your teeth or correcting an overbite, your smile and facial structure will look better. Many people who are self-conscious about their smile find themselves much more confident once they have their orthodontic issues corrected.
