What Is an Orthodontist?

Dr. Amanda Gross in her lab coat at Gross Orthodontics.Crooked and misaligned teeth are not just a cosmetic issue, they can affect your oral health as well. As orthodontists, we here at Gross Orthodontics specialize in a wide variety of treatments designed to correct these issues before major complications arise. In other words, professional orthodontics can help you and your family to maintain beautiful, healthy smiles for years to come.

Orthodontists Vs. General Dentists

These days, lots of general dentists offer some form of orthodontic treatment, whether it is braces or clear aligner trays. However, not all of these dentists have undergone the extensive training required of a licensed orthodontist. This can lead to unsatisfactory results and longer treatment times.

Orthodontists like Dr. Amanda Gross complete two to three additional years of specialized training on top of conventional dental school. This additional preparation ensures orthodontists learn how to safely and effectively move the teeth and jaws into their proper positions. We also participate in continuous education programs. Staying up to date with the latest technologies and techniques helps us provide the best possible care!

The Importance of Orthodontics

According to the American Academy of Orthodontics (AAO), orthodontia is a special branch of dentistry with a focus on preventing, diagnosing, and treating dental and facial irregularities. Many of these irregularities are the result of malocclusion (misaligned bite) or vice versa. Correcting a malocclusion can benefit your overall oral health, provide a more aesthetically-pleasing smile, and ultimately lead to a lifetime of healthy teeth!

Crowded, crooked, or otherwise misaligned teeth can make it harder to maintain proper oral health. For instance, you may not be able to properly brush or floss teeth that are too close together. This can significantly increase your risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental problems. Without orthodontic treatment, your oral health will likely suffer.

Improving the aesthetics of your smile can also improve your self-confidence and self-esteem. Following your orthodontic treatment, you may find yourself with many more reasons to smile!

Does Your Family Need Orthodontics?

Only Dr. Amanda Gross can determine whether or not you and your family could benefit from professional orthodontics. During a consultation appointment, we will conduct a thorough review of your medical and dental histories. Your consultation will also include a comprehensive examination, one that may involve photographs, impressions, and x-rays.

Once we determine that orthodontia is appropriate, we can develop an individualized treatment plan. We typically use the information we gather during your initial exam to determine which procedures and appliances are most suitable. The severity of your orthodontic issues will dictate the type of treatment you receive.

Common Orthodontic Issues

•  Overbite: When the upper teeth severely overlap the lower teeth
•  Underbite: When the lower teeth jut out over the upper teeth
•  Crossbite: When the upper teeth sit on top of the lower teeth rather than a gentle overlap
•  Open Bite: When the upper and lower teeth do not touch while biting down
•  Spacing Issues: Teeth that have significant gaps between them
•  Crowding: Teeth that are too close together due to a small ridge or large crowns
•  Uneven Midline: When the upper center teeth do not align with the lower center teeth
